Points of Interest
In Auckland's oldest park, the Auckland Domain, is the charming Winter Garden, where visitors can admire colourful flowers all year long.
Designed in the 1920s, the Winter Garden exists in two vaulted-ceiling glass houses at the Auckland Domain, a park built in the crater of the Pukekawa Volcano. One building, housing an array of colourful, tropical plants, is kept warm all year long, while the other displays temperate plants that change with the seasons.
Between the glass houses is a large courtyard centred by a picturesque sunken pool, providing a perfect for picnic lunches (it's also a popular photo spot, so remember to bring your camera!). Near the back of the complex lies a fern garden, where the iconic plants can be examined up close.
The adjacent Wintergarden Pavilion Cafe overlooks the gardens and is a great place for a relaxed spot of breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea.
The Winter Garden is free of charge for visitors.
